The college was founded by Sri. R. Ramachandran Nair, former Chief Secretary to the Government of Kerala and the first Vice-Chancellor of Sree Sankaracharya University, Kalady.
He initiated the Vidyadhiraja movement in 1971, leading to a revival of interest in the life and teachings of Sree Vidyadhiraja Chatampi Swamikal, a renowned social reformer and spiritual leader.
Vidyadhiraja Vidya Samajam runs several other educational institutions including schools all across Kerala, a Homeopathic medical college, and a pharmacy college.
